Beidou phase 3 support?

Yesterday a new Beidou satellite was launched. It is rumoured to be a new type. The satellite is referred to as Beidou-3 M1. That makes it the first Beidou-3 satellite. According to GPS World:

The Beidou Phase III system includes the migration of its civil Beidou 1 or B1 signal from 1561.098 MHz to a frequency centered at 1575.42 MHz – the same as the GPS L1 and Galileo E1 civil signals — and its transformation from a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation to a multiplexed binary offset carrier (MBOC) modulation similar to the future GPS L1C and Galileo’s E1. The current (Phase II) B1 open service signal uses QPSK modulation with 4.092 megahertz bandwidth centered at 1561.098 MHz.

Will this work with the Navspark Beidou receiver? If this satellite uses a new signal at GPS/Galileo frequency with an MBOC modulation it is a lot like a Galileo satellite. Since Navspark does not support Galileo signals will it be able to use this Beidou? We will see when the satellite is operational.

  • I don't actually track satellites. I just use software called predict to check whether there are enough Beidou satellites above the horizon for a fix. Predict is actually meant for radio amateurs tracking their communication satellites. It is also very useful if you just want to know whether there are enough navigation satellites in view. Screenshot below shows the current Beidou and Galileo view from my home.

  • Wow! It would be interesting to understand how someone uses two line element parameters to track satellites in the sky as hobby. Would you care to describe a bit? Thanks.

  • Thanks for the reply. You're right, i now see the article explicitly says the system will migrate to MBOC. I'll check the sky for the new satellite. Right now there is not even an orbit TLE to be found.

  • ICD for new signal has not been released yet. Generally it should be migration process, with new satellites simultaneously supporting new and old signals.

    Current Beidou capable receivers on market, unless priced over $2000, FPGA-based, with flexible programmable RF architecture, all low-power small-footprint hardwired designs most likely could not work with new signal, NavSpark-BD included.
